As we remember the 40th anniversary of the miners’ strike this is a story that needs to be told and told again.

Its 1984 and the country is in the midst of what was to be one of the longest and most acrimonious strikes in modern history. The miners’ strike gripped the country and divided a nation. But, amid this an unlikely alliance was formed between the LGBT+ community and the striking miners.
Aware of the effects of the strike on the families of the miners a group of London based LGBT+ campaigners started collecting money to help families through the long months of hardship - and the LGSM (Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners) was born.
Setting off to South Wales uncertain of the reception they’d receive the LGSM found not only a welcome but forged a friendship that now spans over 4 decades and sees the two communities still sharing a solidarity as strong as ever.
Solidarity pays dividends in this story of mutual support and fabulous communities, a true story that really made a difference to so many and contributed to the Equality Laws that brought about great changes for the LGBT+ community.
