Kevin the Kinguin, Mr Easy Freezy, Buddy the Elf and friends are waddling their way over to Doncaster this month when the city proudly hosts the penguin trail as part of this year’s exciting winter celebrations.
The VIPs (Very Important Penguins) are 12 stunning Emperor Penguin sculptures which will be located across the city centre from 23 November to 29 January and will form part of a new and enchanting family-friendly walkable trail. Visitors to Birmingham in 2022 may have seen some of the distant cousins of the penguins which will be arriving soon in Doncaster.
City of Doncaster Council are working with Wild in Art, creative producers of public art events, to bring the penguin sculptures to the city during this year’s Frost Festival. Each of the penguins features individual designs by talented artists and will also be adopted by local businesses and organisations.
Other Frost Festival events taking place include An Evening with Father Christmas at the Mansion House on 7th December and the Frost Festival Finale in Sir Nigel Gresley Square on 21st December with lots of festive entertainment and attractions. There will also be Christmas Cabins in the area around Clock Corner between Frenchgate and Doncaster Market from 2-16 December for plenty of gift ideas.
Phil Holmes, Director of Adults Wellbeing and Culture, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the penguins to Doncaster over the winter as part of this year’s Frost Festival. They’ll certainly bring festive magic to the city as we countdown to Christmas plus we have the pleasure of their company until the end of January so plenty of opportunities for people to join the penguin trail over the coming months.
“Not only will the penguins bring their festive charm to the city but the trail is a great opportunity to get out and about, enjoy a leisurely stroll and clear the head especially during the hectic festive period.”
He added: “The stunning sculptures are part of our annual Frost Festival celebrations which include lots to see and do in the city over the festive period including appearances from Father Christmas, carol singing in Sir Nigel Gresley square, Christmas Cabins and entertainment.
“Local shops and businesses will be entering into the spirit and we’re encouraging people to shop local in Doncaster for their festive fayre and gifts, where they’ll find plenty of great quality and choice.”
